Using Food as Medicine
According to the latest research, extract from the Sambucus Nigra or elderberries could treat more than prevent virus. For years, herbalists have created concoctions with elderberries and other anti inflammatory plants to vanquish colds and flu.
(Since large scale research on humans has not taken place, conventional flu medicine is still recommended for most cases.)
Consider bolstering your healing arsenal with pure elderberry syrup. Why?
-Initial small scale study (60 people) has shown that Influenza A and B ended 4 days earlier with 5 tablespoons of syrup a day vs. placebo. Unlike pharmaceuticals, there were no side affects.
-The flavonoids isolated in elderberry extract have shown to have a power against many virus strains and ward off developing secondary infections. This even includes cold sores!
-Recently elderberries have been linked with artery and heart protection as well as de-stressing properties. Therefore, you could use more frequently than just when a cold strikes.
Experience the synergistic strength of anti-inflammatory ginger, cinnamon, honey and elderflower combined with the elderberry reduction.
1/2 cup dried elderberries (available from herbalists or contact me for online resources)
3 cups water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 inch fresh ginger root chopped with peel
1/4 cup dried elderflower
1 cup raw honey
Bring to boil water with elderberries, cinnamon and ginger.
Reduce heat and mash mixture with a potato masher or large spoon.
Allow to simmer for 30-60 minutes more.
Turn off heat and allow to cool slightly.
Add elderflower and let infuse for 15-30 minutes.
Let cool slightly but strain all plant material from your reduction. Save liquid.
Return liquid to pot and add honey.
Melt the honey into the liquid.
Let cool, bottle and refrigerate.
Syrup should last up to 3 months in the refrigerator.
