Five Tips To Stay Your Course Over The Holidays

Did you know people gain 9 to 10 pounds on average during the holiday season? This year, you can battle the bulge and maybe even tighten your belt! Try these tips that your body will thank you for in the new year!

Eat Sour Foods

Fermented or cultured foods do wonders for balancing your digestive track and culling out the nutrients your cells crave. In addition, they reduce sugar cravings drastically. Try some sauerkraut with live cultures at your next meal and see how you forget about the dessert.

Have Satisfying Snacks at the Ready

If you know that you are attending an office party or holiday open house, be sure to have some homemade desserts with nuts, cacao, nut butters and natural sweeteners prepared to bring or enjoy at home after. That way you can steer clear of white flour, refined sugar and unhealthy oils.

Soups, Salads and Smoothies

Fill up on nutrient dense homemade soups, salads and smoothies. You know what is in them and they should satisfy without packing on the pounds like the heavier meat and dairy based entrees.

Protein Counts

Most adults need about 36% of their body weight in grams of protein per day. So... if you weigh 100 lbs., you need 36 grams of protein a day. Adequate protein will keep your brain running evenly so you do not suddenly crash and want sweets. Meals should have plant protein like beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Eat some salmon, turkey, chicken, and small amounts of red meat and dairy depending on your individual body type.

Maintain or Add Movement

This is a no brainer. If you indulge in the goodies you naturally crave with the darker evenings,
the winter weight will start to build. Even though you are still wired to eat more this time of year, food shortage will not plague you as it did your ancestors centuries ago. Keep moving and look for new ways to stretch, strengthen and tone.
